If I Had My Way

if i had my way
i’d never let you leave
i’d gather
what enchants you
thrills you
makes you laugh
like a child,
become many years younger
and sets
your heart free
and i’d drench you
with all this
that delights you
like a mist of cool rosewater
at a sacred ceremony
if i had my way
i would lift all that worries
your beautiful heart,
tenderly
like a lover lifts delicate buds
off a jasmine bush
to string into a garland
for his beloved
on a hot and humid
moonlit night
in the faraway land
of a faraway time
i would wash
all your deepest
most painful wounds
gently
with my own tears
and blow on them
soft, prayer-kisses
i would hum
for you all night
a lullaby
or your favourite
love-song or prayer
until your eyes cleared
of that ancient pain
you carry
if i had my way
the sound of your voice
your warm fragrant presence
would always be here
you’d always be near
if i had my way
if i only
had my way
