How Would You Know
how would you know
it’s really truly Love
unless it was totally bizarre, irresistible
improper and impossible
in defiance of reason and imagination
undefined by any known category?
how would you know
it’s really, truly Love
unless it came upon you suddenly
and swept you away totally
like a flash flood
of ferocious intensity?
how would you know
it’s really truly Love
unless it stole upon you stealthily
like a soft footed predator
terrible in its majesty
who devoured you hungrily?
if you had taken measured steps
played it safe, done the right thing
sought and received approval
before deciding where, when and how
wouldn’t that have been
like the plans and calculations
you’ve been making all your life?
the ploys
that have rendered your world
dull and tasteless
turned your heart
into a barren,
desolate place
made you cold,
alien and lonely?
how would you know
it’s really truly Love
if it was what you already knew
what you had been raised to do
what you believed was you
what you considered noble
what you thought was duty?
how would you know
it’s really truly Love
unless it destroyed you
completely
to reveal your jeweled essence
for all the world to see?
