The Lover

The Lover


those afraid to
look ahead
at death
get drunk on the world
looking backwards,
keeping count
of what’s happened
in the past

the Lover is a warrior
most courageous

he has learnt
that the past
is a burden on the path
to what he desires
more than life

and that fear of dying
will kill him in ways
much worse than death

so the Lover
looks ahead,
makes of death
a friend
and conquers it

each day
this friend arrives
in a different form -
loss, illness, heartache
failure or disaster

to all this
the Lover opens his mouth
in a kiss

he knows
that to die to himself
is to live forever in the Beloved
in bliss
